Gemini 2: The Duplicate Finder App Reviews

96 add

I was looking for a white paper on how to clean my mac and found this

I love that it cleans up the Mac without me having to become an expert in Mac Internals. With the small SSD drives one needs to stay on top of misc files.

Never even gets off the ground

I’ve deleted and reinstalled. I’ve trashed the preferences. But no matter what I do, I can’t even get so far as to evaluate the duplicate removal ability. I get an immediate crash every time I open the dialog to choose folders to process. Every time. Waste of money.

Very easy to use, fast and effective.

I seldom use Gemini 2, because I’m tidy with my files, but heavy work sessions with exceptions occur. When things get messy, I open Gemini 2, and behold, everything is as tidy as it should be in five minutes! Generally I delete duplicate documents, but with photos and other stuff it can compare, it’s a no brainer.

Doesn’t seem to work properly

I bought it and installed it last night and I left it running overnight - I selected my ~/Documents folder. This morning the process was not responding and I killed it. Next, because I was looking for duplicate songs, I selected the Music folder. It found some songs, then I realized I didn’t add another folder where I have some music as well, I clicked Start Over, and after adding Music, adding the other folder under ~/Documents just doesn’t work. Nothing happens when I select the second folder. Also scanning just Music doesn’t find any duplicate files anymore.

Never had a bad McPaw experience

This company rocks. Gemini 2 is saving me even more time than Gemini 1 did - and I was already thrilled with that. Good support, too. Love these people.

Well… that didn’t work.

I need to free up space, and I know i have plenty of duplicates. I used the trial version and it found I could clear up like 20GB of space (but the trail version won’t clear them) so I figured it was worth it to drop $20 and fix it. Now that I have the “real” version… it only finds about a gig, and it’s different every time I run it. I can, literally find duplciate songs in itunes it ignores outright. Frustrated, should have saved my money (you should too).

If it was a meal I would still be hungry.

I first bought Cleanmymac3 because I read it was a "do it all" app for my mac. Everything except what I wanted. Next I bought Gemini2 when they offered it at precisely the time I realized I did not have a function specifically for duplicates. It may have removed a few but I literally have thousands left, I’m out 50 bucks and still have the same problems that I had before making my purchases. These dup files are mostly exact dups of pictures that somehow transferred from my old mac to my new one multiple times. Same name, size, etc. Shouldn’t a "duplicate remover" app remove duplicate files? If not, what good is it?

find copies but frezzes when almost done

seems like once its gets to the ending the bar stops but it keeps on finding copies and the file name doesnt change could it be that i have to much music for it to load because i am a dj and i have about 975 gb of music. idk but i would like to knw if there is a fix because thos program would help me a lot

crash

nice interface but crashes on a regular especialy with a large volume of files, better with smaller batches but that defetes the purpose of deleting duplicates.

Great Application Does a Better Job of All Around Duplicate Detection & Choices of Selection, Auto

Gemini, an application that should be on the “Essentials” list for anyone that is a by nature Horder of files or the over archiving of files. We are the people who run backups with different methods, often more than one, Folder Copy, Folder Compression and Zip Archive, Time Machine, etc. We even might have the same, copied from our first Commodor 64, IBM PS/2, Compaq Desktop, first laptops and hard drives found after going through a closet full of computer parts. Ok, maybe your not that extreme, but lets take it to the unknown, unrealized tww handfulls of duplicated 10gb vidios misplaced years ago; just removing them one might have a huge amount of space. It does an excelent job of compairing folders against each other, or an entire disk. Running three pictures folders added, and I have more control, feeling comfortable knowing these huge folders, therefore the fear factor of loosing something is low. The point is, to eliminate, then consolidate. Who has a “My Documents” folder from a Windows PC and a “Documents” folder on your Mac, two perfect folders to run together. The program is highly granular, allowing you to find duplicatres based upon default rules or ones we set up. You can set file extentions you dont want touched, or to be never selected for deletion over another. An example, almost 100 percent of the time I never want my RAW photos deleted over a JPG. If you know the difference, then you can relate exactly to why, Raw Photos contain all the information captured by the camera and all light captured by the sensor. While larger, one can always use non-destruting editing software the result perhaps being another JPG. Once that JPG is created however, it drops data unneeded and every time you save a JPG, it looses some amount of qulaity. The default list of files to avoid also help prevent system files or application files from being deleted, entire folders to be ignored. I could go on, an entire page, writing what I consider the “PRO’s” of Gemini II. I do have a complaint though when it came to upgrading to Gemini II from the 1st version, I was unable to get upgrade pricing. Second, I was a beta tester for this version and even went as far as setting up a virtual machine and lots of duplicates to try things many different ways, reporting any errors or glitches found. I would have thought, with the time I put into it, perhaps 15 - 20hrs during this period, they might have sprung for an upgrade copy, maybe even a thank you. Nothing. Consider this if you Beta test for them, or they come out with Gemini III. There is no consideration for loyal customers or those who help work the bugs out at no cost to the developers.

didn’t help me

I have a hundred’s of duplicates. Some appeared to have the same exact file name and date. These files were not caught by Gemini. I reached out to their help desk. After some back and forth they let me know that the files were somehow slightly different. I’m not sure how different, same file name, date and duration (for the videos). They insist that they’re not the same. I can’t really argue, but I know that this program didn’t do what I thought it would.

Super easy but still detailed

This is quick and easy when it needs to be and gives the option for more in depth analysis when I want it. Great app. Free up some SPACE!!!

as advertised

Easy to use and helps find those pesky duplicates.

Easy, fast, smart - what’snot to like?

Answer: Not much… This app is a must for any computer, especially if you have a bunch of external drives to store your files. Being able to quickly find duplicates on a single or multiple drive is a space saver! I especially likes that it tries to learn from what you select to keep/delete, and still let’s you check on it selection. Good App!

Love it!

This app is easy to use, fast, and effective.I definitely recommend it

Close but painful gaps

This app is close to what it could be, but falls short. For example, the “intelligent” selection fails to notice that the selections for what to delete are all in the same folder. Not only should it figure this out, when dropping multiple folders on the application at the same time it should allow prioritization on the spot. The “similar” algorithm could use some controls to be better at distinguishing consecutive pictures versus resized or otherwise adjusted pictures. It also could cue on exif data to identify originals.

Perfect

It’s really good. Helps remove duplicates fast and works without any problems.

Doesn’t do well with iTunes

Although you may be able to delete the files in your iTunes folder, you will still have to delete the tracks in iTunes itself afterwards, which somewhat defeats the purpose.

GEMINI II very Efficient

Been using Gemini for several years now and it works great! Easy to use and review files thank you Mike
