Gemini 2: The Duplicate Finder App Reviews

Great Application

I just removed almost 3 GB of duplicate photos. Love it!

Awesome app, really intuitive

First scan I got rid of 2.26tb of duplicate files and everything was very well laid out. Def worth the price.

Great Improvement Over Last Version

This is a must for anyone who’s a digital hoarder like me. I keep creating automations that sometimes produce unwanted duplicates. I used to take a lot longer to go through each of the duplicates Gemini finds but now it learns your preferences as to which files you value most (trash your oldest files or from a certain location and such). Also, love the new interface.

So far it takes an entire day to go filter through 42,000 photos

This is by no means a quick program. It is taking an entire day for it to filter through 42,000 photos. And it still has ¼ more to go. I am expecting for it to take an entire 24 hours. I will be asking for my money back.

GREAT app ...

This app is perfect for finding and removing duplicates AND “near-duplicates” scattered throughout your hard drive. Let it run overnight once a week, and you’ll be astonished at what it finds. A MUST-have.

Feeds info to 3rd parties

The developer needs to clearly explain why this app is connecting to third parties, like Google, when it is launched. Any data about my system transmitted to a third party, or to the app developer, should be on an opt-in basis only, not automatic and unannounced. It is irrelevant how innocent or useful the developer thinks this spying is: that is for me to decide. I paid for the app to clean up duplicate files, not to violate my privacy and data security. There is no excuse possible for this deceptive, recklesss, abusive behavior. The developer is located in the hacking capital of the former Eastern Bloc, Ukraine, so this only adds to the concern.

Feature Suggestion

When you use this product for the Photos Library, it is impractical because it will display too many similar pictures, that you do not ever want to delete. The software needs to have a feature that allows you to REVIEW AND HIDE SOME OF THE MANY SIMILAR RESULTS so that you can focus on new duplicates ONLY and delete them without having to pass the thousands of duplicates that you want to KEEP in your library. For an example of similar pictures: a baby smiling, and a baby opening the mouth to be fed, which one would you delete? -you might want to keep both pictures in this example. And you do not want to have to see that picture every time you scan your library for similars.

Better than the rest

This program found pretty much all the duplicates in my library that remained. Similar programs did not manage to get some of them. I liked that I could target specific photos or folders, that was great. Made things easier. Suggestion: show the DATE of the photo. The “last modified” date is not useful. Show the date the photo says it was taken / created. I have a lot of double imports and it’s nice to be able to figure out which version has the correct day. Also, it would be nice to be able to rotate photos within the app (it’s hard to compare duplicates when they flip 90 degrees).

Waste of Money

Really wish I could get my money back on this. It didn’t help me at all. It didnt even find my duplicate pictures in photos and iphoto.

This App Makes Clean Up A BREEZE

Easiest and most user friendly app that I have used to clean up my files and give me extra space. I would highly reccomend this app if you are looking for a way to clean up duplicate files and provide yourself with some additional space on your harddrive. Thank you MacPaw.

Didn’t work as expected

I used this app to remove duplicate songs in iTunes. This did not work. I paid 20$ and could have done a better job with a terminal command. =(

Gemini 2

Works great so far. Saves a lot of much need space.

Powerful but Needy

As you might imagine, an app that scans and compares data files is VERY disk intensive. As long as the app is open, it automatically monitors files, and that means other apps will be slow or unresponsive. That said, this is very usable, and fairly intuitive, although a little aggressive on the deletion.

After years of use, I find a new feature that made my day

I already liked Gemini2 having used Gemini1 for years. This weekend while de-duplicating a Terabyte of overlapping backups, I just learned that I can tune the automatic selection by selecting one of the duplicates — whose path I know to be full of duplicates okay to delete — and then right-mousing so that Gemini2 asks “do you want to select duplicates also found in this folder?”. THAT feature discovery is a HUGE win for me and hence, this positive review of Gemini2

Am I the only one who hates this new layout?

It takes much longer to scan, it’s more locked out and makes more assumptions about your choices. Seems like they tried to make it more user friendly and instead screwed those of us over who have been using it for years. It’s like a toy now when it used to be a legitimate utility.

What is going on?

I tried the trial version of this program. It indicated that I had almost 17 gigabytes of duplicate files, primarily music. So I bought the program for $20. It now indicates that I have almost no duplicate files. Maybe I am using it wrong; or maybe it is a scam.

It DOES NOT remove duplicates its just a pretty app

I want a refund MacPaw Inc! This does not remove duplicates. Fix the bugs and make it work like it’s supposed to.

The deduplicator of my dreams

Other de-duplication apps either do the job but are ugly, or look good but are completely unintuitive. Gemini is a dream come true if you’re a power user. Would more than happily rebuy this every few weeks just for the hours it saves me.

Only catches ~20% of duplicates and not enough filters

Gemini 2 is a huge disappointment. For $20 I expected a much better program. Rough estimate this program only catches about 20% of the duplicates in images, and worse in music. This is how bad the software is - I scanned a folder with about 10GB of images in it that I knew had a lot of duplicates - the program found 1GB. I clicked the smart clean button, and went through the similar dupes list and deleted those as well. Then I and scanned the EXACT SAME FOLDER again, and found another 300MG of duplicates. What the what? I also scanned a folder with about 100 songs in it, and I knew there were two exact duplicates in there, and the program missed them entirely. There’s also a “smart selection” feature that is flat out dumb. Instead of giving you the option up front of selecting to delete files that are older, or newer, or smaller, or larger, this “algorithm” supposedly picks up on the trends in your selection of files to delete, and asks you if you want to make this a rule. You can’t just set up a rule ahead of time, you have to wait for this suggestion window to pop up. Dumb. I’m ticked I spent $20 on this junk. Look elsewhere.

Gemeni 2 Does not clean drives

Gemeni 2 is nothing like the original. I really liked the original Gemeni when it first came out. I have a tendency to have many copies due to multiple back ups. Using the first Gemeni I could save a ton of space. I just ran Gemeni 2 on a 4tb drive. It claims it found 500gb, but only says it deleted 143gb. The "command I" on the drive shows no new space available. As for the rest of the files it lists, it will not clean them. Dont waste your time and money on Gemeni 2.
