Gemini 2: The Duplicate Finder App Reviews

im so happy with it.

4 stars because needs some improvments especially on auto selecting.

Don’t Buy It Waste of time and Money

The instructions were useless. I’m not even sure it is running except for the little running wheel. It has been running for 3 days on photos with nothing but the wheel turning. I checked to see if I needed to use force quick. How do I get my money back?

$10 but unable to turn off sound?

I hate sound notification, but there is no way to turn it off. UX much? It would be great if MacPaw hired a UX-designer who actually knows his/her field.

10 second hang and wait every time I click on ANYTHING!

The new version has some serious performance issues that the prior version didn’t. After analyzing my disk, as I am revewing the duplicate files the app hangs for about 10 second any time I click anything. Much longer if I actually click a button in the app. Its mind numbingly horrendous how long it takes to review your dup files and try to delete them. So much that I just killed the app after 5 minutes (and reviewing 15 files)

very good. some unlabeled buttons but does not detract from user experience.

There really is no way to view the paths of the files, otherwise its very good. There are a few unlabeled buttons with no help tags, however Im sure the dev can label them in an update, or at least put help tags so voiceover users can take advantage of what ever the software has to offer.

This app is amazing

Easy to use, great interface, absolutely loved the animation. Wiped out a bunch of duplicates, will definitely recommend it to my friends, worth every penny. I also appreciated Achievements idea which needs a bit more time to figure out, but makes the app fun as well

Doesn’t find a single duplicate.

I have over 4000 photos on my mac with a good share of duplicates. After 20 minutes of processing Gemini 2 said no duplicates found and had me go manually through deleting similar files. That’s what I was trying to avoid. Useless.

Works great if you use it right.

Today is Monday, 16 May 2016. I just bought the Gemni 2 upgrade and used it. The program is working fine. For best results, don’t try to scan your entire hard drive. Let’s say you think you have some duplicate photos in two different places. Follow these steps: (1) Create a single folder on your desktop called ‘compare’ and then drop folders or files inside of that. (2) Click and drag the ‘compare’ folder into the Gemini 2 app. It compares everything in the folder you drop onto the app. It’s really that simple.

Not the same as the original Gemini. Read this first!

I noticed Gemini 2 was out and I aam a huge fan of the original Gemini but am not upset and wishing there was a refund option. Am I missing something or is there no longer a way to select all duplicated in a folder that I determine? I used to copy my DSLR images over to a folder on my internal HDD, then I’d scan my SD Card and the internal HDD for duplicated and removed those from THE CARD. This is no longer possible. By default GEmini 2 selects SOME RANDOM copy of the file “intelligently” but that random copy is always the copy on my internal drive. I placed the camera images in ~/Desktop/Imported_images, I then DESELECTED ~/Desktop /from the “Always Select” Smart Selection pane in the app’s prefernces. Still dosnt work. the desktop versino is always selected. Gone is the menu item “Duplicates > Select all items in folder…” option. Very irritated. Terrible direction to go in. That is not a power user feature, it’s a basic requirement. Shame!

Excellent Upgrade - that should have been free

This is NOT a completely new package, it’s not even a significant upgrade. It is frustrating when tools like Pixelmator provide significant upgrade for FREE, that a utility tool like Gemini charges for an incremental upgrade.

Slow interaction with Photos

I just wish there was a way to reveal all thumbnails of the pictures so I could select the one I want to remove. The process is painstakingly slow. I need to click on the little arrow, expand the options and then specifically click on every version of the photo to see what it is. It won’t load immediately, mind you. So, in order to remove, say, 50MB, I’ll spend a good 3 to 5 minutes. The new function that groups the pictures that are similar has proven to be a little bit unreliable. TO the point I am kind of nervous to let it do anything that is fully automated. Of the 14 pictures so-called similar, NONE of them were really similar to one another. So, as far as Photos goes the manual process is time consuming, the automated process not 100% reliable. I’m having a hard time recommending this product that I’ve used consistently for, say, regular files and not photos in Photos. Good for files in general, for Photos I’d say no for me in its present version.

Love it. Easy and effective.

A very helpfiul lil’ app!

Nice improvements but still needs work

I love how fast the program works (compared to the version 1 that I also bought). The image recognition is excellent. I wish there was an easier way to sort through thumbnails though, instead of having to click the arrow, click on each photo to see the larger version, and then clicking the ones I want to remove. What I would like to see in an update is a way to sort through photos quickly with large previews and maybe size and resolution information as well to ensure I can delete inferior photo versions instead of higher quality ones. Looking forward to updates!

not perfect, but it’s a helpful upgrade

This new version of Gemini is even easier to use and is a much welcomed upgrade. I was also delighted to see MacPaw’s integration of an achivement system in this app. Perhaps it’s a bit unnecessary but it certainly helped make the overall experience more enjoyable. The best new feature of Gemini 2 is the similar file function, admitedly I ignore it most of the time because I generally don’t delete something simply because it’s similar to another file. However, it’s most useful when you’re comparing duplicates that were messed up slightly and would normally go under the radar. The addition of this feature guarantees you’ll find any duplicates and proves how well this app is at detecting them. The only drawbacks of this app is that it isn’t great at handling bulk files. The automated feature is helpful at times and you can perform bulk actions by selecting all of the files and right clicking them. However most of the commands you can do are quite limited so you still have to go through and manually check a couple of them. Anyway, if you haven’t previously bought the original gemini, than I highly recommend this app. For Gemini users, if you really want to save some money, you can probably go without this new version. However if you have $20 bucks lying around, the new user interface and features are really nice and makes it much faster and pleasant to use.

So far so good

Just purchased this app. So far so good. Easy to use, intuitive and so helpful. Didn’t have as many duplicates as I thought but I’m still checking.

Huge improvement over Gemini

I am “one of those people” who is always looking for a way to do things better. This is a gem. The process of finding and deleting duplicates in Gemini 2 is a huge improvement over Gemini, which I had settled on for detecting, reviewing and deleting duplicates. This app does what it says it will do and is WELL WORTH THE MONEY. (I paid for the app myself and have no affiliation with the developer.)
